Audio Flipbook: Day of the Dead
On November 1 and 2, Mexicans celebrate All Saints’ and All Souls’ Day. In the weeks leading up to this “Day of the Dead,” Mexico City bursts with color. Residents build ornate altars to their deceased loved ones, and dress up skeletons like scarecrows as a reminder that death is a part of everyone’s life.
Audio Flipbook: Old School Mariachis
At the music school where I study in Mexico City, many of my classmates dream of becoming professional mariachis. They’re part of a new generation of musicians who depend on institutions, sheet music, and instructors to learn traditional Mexican music and build up their repertoires.
To hear what their elders had to say about this, I talked with an established mariachi (the term mariachi applies to a single musician, the entire group, and the style of music that they play) in the colonial city of Puebla.
Up to four awards will be available to pursue projects around an aspect of international contemporary or popular music as a cultural force for expression. Preference will be given to creative projects that are conveyed in a dynamic fashion and are accompanied by a feasible plan. In addition to presenting unique projects on music as a global force for mutual understanding. Deadline to apply is March 1, 2012.
